Why cite sources?

In the United States as well as many countries around the world, both professionals and students must cite the resources they use in their work. Citing resources is important for the following reasons:

  1. Provides support: Citing your resources tells your reader where you found the information you used for your assignment.
  2. Helpful information: Citing your sources allows the reader to read your original sources for more information.
  3. Credibility: Citing your sources provides credibility to your work.
  4. Giving credit: Citing your sources gives credit to those who originated the words or ideas.
  5. Plagiarism: Citing your sources protects you from plagiarism.
