What WorldCat is and how to use it.

Searching WorldCat

Access WorldCat at https://worldcat.org/.

To find a book at a library near you, be sure to complete the following steps:

Before using WorldCat, check to see if the UMass Global Library has the item you need by following the instructions on the Finding and Downloading eBooks guide.

Step One: Set your location so that WorldCat returns results ordered by the libraries closest to you.

Step Two: Search for the Item You Need

  • Type the title or author in the search box and click Search.
  • When you get a results list, it may help to click the Print Book filter on the left. Public libraries may allow you to download some eBooks, but college and university libraries may not.
  • Click on the title of the book for more information. You will be directed to a page showing how many copies of the book are available and where you might be able to get one.

Step Three: Verify the Details

Use the filters on this page to make sure you are looking at the correct edition of the book you need, and to choose a library that is most conveniently located.

1. Click Show More to see the book's details and make sure it is the correct edition.

2. Clicking Borrow brings you to the website of a nearby library that owns a copy of the book. This DOES NOT allow you to directly download or borrow the eBook. Contact the library that owns the title for assistance.

3. Use the Filter by drop-down options to select different versions of the book, or the distance you are willing to travel to obtain and return a print copy.

4. The information next to the globe icon tells you how many copies of the book are available, and the number of libraries that have it. Libraries are more likely to lend a book when many copies are available.

5. Toggle from Featured libraries to All Libraries that have a copy of the book.

6. Checking the Only Public Libraries box shows only public libraries that own the book and excludes college and university libraries, private libraries and museums or special collections. You will likely have more extensive use privileges at your local public library.

7. Get Directions brings you to a map and directions to the selected library from the location you set in Step 2.
